Polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE for short, is one of the common names for Teflon. PTFE hose is used in stainless steel hose so the hose lasts much longer than rubber hose or rubber encased in stainless steel. It has many benefits over rubber products.
Benefits of Using PTFENylon braided hose – PTFE – helps to prevent gas odors from permeating the hose itself and allowing odors in your shop or garage. This type of hose resists all types of fluids and chemicals, including gas, ethanol, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid and antifreeze. Rubber doesn’t resist these fluids nearly as long as PTFE since the chemicals tend to break the rubber down. If you don’t notice it, eventually the hose will start leaking. If you don’t notice a gas leak, your vehicle could catch fire, simply due to the heat in the engine compartment.
Furthermore, PTFE has higher temperature tolerances than rubber does. Thus if the engine overheats, you have less chance of the heat damaging the hoses. In addition to the high heat tolerance of PTFE, it has a higher pressure rating than rubber. Thus, should one of the systems, such as the cooling system or power steering malfunction in such a way that it causes more pressure than it should, there is less chance of blowing a PTFE hose. Size AN6 is able to handle up to 2,500 psi.
Finally, if you buy nylon braided or stainless steel hose made with PTFE instead of rubber, your new hoses will give your engine a more professional look. If you are looking for strength but prefer the more muted black nylon, you don’t have to worry – our nylon braided lines do have stainless – they are just covered with nylon.
