The Best Race Cars for Beginners

You don’t have to have a ton of cash to start racing. It helps, but it’s not mandatory. You should have enough for repairs, though. Granted, you won’t be super fast to begin with, but when you’re learning, slower is better. You’ll also learn how to get every bit of performance out of that slower car and you’ll be safer while you are learning. Some of the best cars for beginners include the Mustang, BMW, Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Mazda.

Mustang

Look for a used Mustang from the 1960s. Learn to drive it in all kinds of situations, then take it to the track. Most tracks require safety gear, so you’ll need to buy that before you race any vehicle.

BMW 3-Series

Find one of these from any time during the 1980s through 2005. Strip the interior, leaving only the front seats and find one of the racing series that are dedicated to the 3-series.

Camaro

Get an older Camaro or Firebird and have a blast. If you have a few bucks and some mechanical talent, you can get two horsepower per cubic inch on the vehicles with the older V-8s, especially the big blocks. See how your engine building skills are by getting the most horsepower without adding nitrous, supercharger or blower.

Mazda RX-8

This is a vehicle with a rotary engine. The engine has the ability to turn some really high revs. These are great for most any kind of track racing. For roundy-round, they are well-balanced and handle great. For drag racing, the rotary engines are able to rev really high at the tree, allowing you to get off the line quicker. Just be careful not to red light!
